Trafford MV extended their unbeaten winning start to the season with a 62 – 0 victory at home against Rossendale. MV even had a starting XV for the game, but they played the second half with two less as two of the lads chose to head over to ‘Middle Eastlands’ to watch some football game or other – some people just have no sense of commitment to their rugby team J. Anyway there was a sense of symmetry to the game and despite the adjustment in player numbers the score line in each half was 32 – 0. Despite the result, it has to be said that Rossendale never gave up and showed good spirit, nearly getting over the try line themselves later in the second half for what would have been well deserved points.
Both sides looked to be testing each other out during the opening 10 minutes, and it took this time before MV first managed to breach Rossendale’s defence with Moose bagging his first of two tries. Next to cross the line was Kelly who picked up from the base of a ruck and drove over from close range. Then from a relieving kick downfield by the Rossendale full back, Gally caught the kick on half way and ran the ball back all the way through the Rossendale defence to score his first of two tries. Next it was Wheeler’s turn to get on the end of a clever switch pass using Joe Gray as a decoy runner through the centre and leaving Wheeler with an easy run in to then line. The last try of the first half was scored by Gray himself who made a typical run evading a number of tackles on his way to the line. Half time score: 31 – 0 to MV.
‘Big’ Danny Kelly got the second half try count going with a typical charge bursting through despairing tackles as he went. Next up was Lordy who was there in support of Gray charging down the wing when he picked up a difficult bouncing ball at his feet and beat the last line of defence to score in the corner. This was followed by Moose with his second try, gathering the ball from the kick off and putting in a strong solo run through the Rossendale defence. Next Gally picked up his second of the afternoon. Finally Wheeler got his second when he was first to get to the kick and chase downfield and retrieved and then grounded the ball ahead of the two Rossendale backs after it had rebounded off the post.
Final score: 62 – 0 and another strong performance by the MV forwards and backs. Thanks to the Rossendale lads who never let their heads go down and thanks to Mr Courtney for refereeing a good open game and for dealing fairly and evenly with developments on the pitch.
